EAST RUTHERFORD (June 12, 2008, 1:25 p.m.) — A tractor-trailer carrying bricks crashed into a divider on Route 3 East near the intersection with the New Jersey Turnpike, spilling 150 gallons of diesel fuel onto the roadway around 11:45 a.m. (June 12). The crash sparked a major traffic jam on all roads surrounding the area including Route 17 and Route 120, and promises to cause several headaches for the rush-hour commute.

East Rutherford Police Lt. Dennis Rivelli said that the police had closed down all three lanes traveling eastbound on Route 3 and the left lane on the westbound side as well. On the eastbound side, police are directing cars off the pavement onto the grass shoulder to clear the area.

Other traffic has been diverted onto Route 17 South.

Sand has also been spread onto the roadway to control the fuel spill, East Rutherford Police Sgt. Chris Conforti.
