(Nov. 11, 2010) — Dear Connie,
I am currently a small animal science student at Delaware Valley College. I am taking a class called "Canine Training and Behavior" in which I must choose an AKC-recognized dog breed and e-mail a breeder to learn about the breed. Could you please e-mail me back if you are a breeder of the flat coated retriever or if you know a breeder of these dogs?
I do not have any breeder contacts in this area for you. There are not a lot of FCRs out there actually, compared to other retriever breeds like Labs and goldens.
A friend of mine is a flat coated retriever person here in New Jersey who works her dog in the field and is very involved in our local kennel club, the Palisades K.C. I think her current dog came from California. I'll touch base with her and get back to you with any news she may have for you.
I strongly encourage any potential dog owner to become educated regarding the breed standard, potential health and hereditary issues and responsible breeding practices.
Flat coats are great dogs but do better with experienced handlers who can give them the physical exercise and mental stimulation they need. Training should start early and continue.
If you want to talk to some professional dog people and see beautiful dogs up close, head over to the Meadowlands Pet Expo at the Meadowlands Expo Center at Harmon Meadows in Secaucus. The expo center is located at 355 Plaza Drive next to the Mill Creek Mall.
The hours for the Pet Expo on Saturday are 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., on Sunday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
I'll be there with The Palisades Kennel Club, so stop by our booth.
An added bonus, well mannered dogs on leash are also welcome to attend the expo.
In the meantime, here are two links that can help you locate a FCR breeder.
For a list of breeders and information about the Flat-Coated Retriever Society of America, you can contact the membership secretary. Breeders included on the list are all FCRSA members, but "inclusion on the list does not imply endorsement by the FCRSA."
Or you can also contact the Mid-Atlantic FCR Club: http://www.mafcrc.org
See you at the expo!
