WOOD-RIDGE (Aug. 26, 2010) — Following a season in which the Wood-Ridge High School softball squad reeled off eight straight wins and earned the program’s first state section title, as well as it’s first trip to the state finals, four members of the Lady Blue Devils have garnered some level of post-season plaudits, as senior Hailey Bartek, junior Danielle Matoli and sophomores Nicole Fleck and Alyssa McKhann were all elected to the All-BCSL/National Division rosters by that conference’s coaches conclave in the final year of existence of that legendary league.
After earning the program’s first championship of any kind last year, the BCSL/National crown, with a 15-3 mark in conference combat, but finishing behind the two tied title-taking teams: Saint Mary of Rutherford and Secaucus this time around, the eighth-slotted locals upset their way to the NJSIAA North Jersey Section 1, Group 1 state championship.
They did so by whitewashing Waldwick, the ninth seed, 4-0, in the first round of post-season play, prior to passing Park Ridge, the top seed, 2-1, in a quarterfinal round clash, clocking Cresskill, the fourth seed, 6-3, in a section semifinal round showdown and stopping sixth seeded Saddle Brook, 4-2, in the N1, G1 title tussle.
In the state semi’s, Wood-Ridge waylaid Whippany Park, the section 2 title taker, 3-1, but then saw its eight game late season win skein ended by a 3-0 loss to 29-2 New Egypt in the State Group 1 crown clash at Toms River East.
Unfortunately, despite months of requests, Wood-Ridge head coach Jill Clementi declined to provide any information about her title-taking team or any statistics pertaining to the squad’s four honored players.
