Joella Pounds joins St. Mary

We are proud to announce that Joella Pounds will be joining the St. Mary High School staff for the 2009-10 school year.

Pounds attended Long Island University on a full athletic scholarship and played in the Northeast Athletic Conference. She graduated in 2009 with a masters degree in Health Science and Athletic Training. Pounds will work in the Development Office with Michael Sheridan.

She will also serve as the athletic trainer for our athletes and will be an assistant girls basketball coach during the winter season.

While at St. Mary, Pounds distinguished herself as an outstanding student/athlete. She was a member of the National Honor Society and participated in a variety of service organizations within the school. These included the Peer Ministry Program, S.O.A.R. and Student Council. Joella was one of the most honored athletes in St. Mary’s legendary history.

Beginning in the fall season, she ran cross country track for three years and was honored by being selected Second Team All-League (Bergen Record). During the fall season, Joella was a four year varsity basketball starter and was named captain of the team in her sophomore year.

She was a three time All-League, All-County, All-Area player (Bergen Record, Herald News) and was a recipient of the Athlete of the Week award (Bergen Record).

During this time, she also was named to the Freshman/Sophomore All State Team. She scored her 1,000th point in her junior year and was honored as one of the top five point guards in New Jersey by the Newark Star Ledger. She was nominated for the prestigious Mc Donald All-American Tournament in her senior year.

Pounds was a three-year varsity softball player in the spring season. In her senior year she tore her ACL/meniscus in her right knee and did not play.

However, during the three years that she played shortstop, she was twice selected All-League and All-Area and Second Team All-County (Bergen Record).

Pounds is a positive role model for any young lady.

Her ability to dedicate herself to both academics and athletics has placed in a leadership role for everyone to admire and follow.

We are honored to have a Gael of this stature return to the St. Mary High School family and extend our best wishes.

— Submitted by Michael Sheridan, Director of Development and Alumni Affairs for St. Mary High School
