WALLINGTON (April 2, 2009) — Every 2.5 seconds, someone needs a blood transfusion and one donation can save up to three lives. Wallington High School became a part of the fight to save those lives on Friday, February 13th by holding its first ever blood drive. With the Media Center transformed in to a blood bank, this event was organized by high school nurse, Mrs. Mary Bartlett, and Community Blood Services of Paramus.
There was an overwhelming response to this drive with over 50 donors, double the anticipated amount.
Teachers donated on their own time and were extremely cooperative and understanding with students who donated and missed some of their classes. The technicians, as well as Mrs. Bartlett, had nothing but praise for the students' behavior and commitment to this volunteer service.
“The students were very patient during the backup caused by the overwhelming turnout and were very positive, as well as showing great maturity,” commented Bartlett, “The school should feel proud of how the students conducted themselves.”
In addition to the blood donations, red shirts, blue jeans, and red pins were the “uniform of the day” as staff members donated $5 each and were permitted to wear jeans for one day. Proceeds were donated to “Go Red for Heart Health.”
