Sports SceneSouth Bergen Sports Roundup

By James Dombrowski / Sports Columnist

(Oct. 28, 2010) — The biggest winners in South Bergen last week were Pat Rono and the Rutherford football team. The hopefully future Olympian who has helped rekindle the Lyndhurst Cross Country team by making all his teammates better has easily won the Division C X-C championships held at Darlington County Park in Mahwah. Rono's led all runners regardless of division with a time of 15:14.

Sports SceneSouth Bergen Sports Roundup

By James Dombrowski / Sports Columnist

(Oct. 22, 2010) — The New Jersey Devils are off to one of their worst starts in franchise history at 1-4-1. Considering that they have already played four games at home to start the 2010-11 NHL season, panic could set in real soon. Playing in their fourth season at their fabulous new home in Newark, the Devils made the summer months exciting for their fans by signing Ilya Kovalchuk to a $100 million deal that was out of Devils character but necessary in today's world of having a star player to draw fans.

Sports ScenePanthers earn first championship since 1996

By W. L. Bill Allen, Jr. / New Jersey Sport/Action

WALLINGTON (Oct. 21, 2010) — Competing in the brand-new NJIC/Meadowlands League-Division A loop, the gridiron contingent from Wallington High has done something that it has been unable to do since 1996, win or share a championship. With just five teams in the Meadowlands-A grouping, three of those five: longtime rivals Wallington and Saint Mary and newcomer Saddle Brook each went 3-1 in conference combat and have forged a three-way tie for the league championship, leaving only Hasbrouck Heights (1-3) and Wood-Ridge (0-4) out in the cold.

Sports SceneSt. Mary’s football squad shares top title with area towns

By W. L. Bill Allen, Jr. / New Jersey Sport/Action

RUTHERFORD (Oct. 21, 2010) — While the vast majority of coaches, players and fans were not in favor of the new New Jersey Interscholastic Conference lineup, the fact that there are, now, far more titles to be doled out has helped ease the pain of the destruction of the long-standing and venerable groupings such as the BCSL and NBIL.

Such might just be the case for Saint Mary High in Rutherford, where the Gaels have finished in a three-way tie for the brand new NJIC/Meadowlands League-Division A championship with longtime rival Wallington and newcomer Saddle Brook.

Top StoriesFootball program helps those with special needs

By Jennifer Vazquez / Reporter

LYNDHURST (Oct. 15, 2010) — Sports have always occupied an important place in our society. After all, engaging in sports, whether it be as a fan or participant is a way in which people from all walks of life can come together, even if it’s for a couple of hours, and put all their differences aside for a common goal.

This also holds true for a team of young children and adolescents with special needs, who even though they may be faced with certain obstacles, come together, along with their ever-supportive families, and are given a chance at normalcy through the world of sports.
