Things to Do

LYNDHURST — For the first time, the Lyndhurst Fire Department Training Division invites residents of the Township of Lyndhurst to watch Lyndhurst firefighters in action on the academy fireground training with propane fire emergencies, and to learn safety tips for home propane use.

The training event will be held on Friday, Sept. 9, from 7 p.m. to 10:30 p.m., at the Bergen County Law & Public Safety Institute, Mahwah. Training will include a classroom lecture, followed by live fire evolutions outside on the fireground. Any firefighters and residents interested in attending will meet at Lyndhurst Fire Headquarters, 299 Delafield Ave. (201-804-2441).

Bus transportation will be provided, courtesy of the Lyndhurst Parks and Recreation Department, for any resident interested in attending; apparatus and buses will board at 6:15 p.m. and will leave Lyndhurst at 6:30 p.m. sharp. Call 201-804-2482 for transportation reservations.

HACKENSACK — Applications are now being accepted for the 2005-06 term for the Master Gardener Program, part of Rutgers-Cook College and administered through Rutgers Cooperative Research & Extension. Deadline is Sept. 2. Classes begin in October.

Classes take place in Hackensack at the County Administration Building, One Bergen County Plaza, in The Learning Center. There are field trips during the course, as well as classroom learning. Following 100 hours of training, students must volunteer 100 hours of service.

WOOD-RIDGE — The Wood-Ridge Recreational Soccer meeting and parent orientation night will be held on Thursay, Aug. 18 at 8 p.m., at the Civic center. All parents are encouraged to attend.

RUTHERFORD — The membership of Mt. Ararat Baptist Church, 27 Elm St. (off Washington Avenue), Rutherford, will sponsor a festival and sale on Saturday, Aug. 20, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The event will be held rain or shine.

There will be a variety of tables offering jewelry, ceramics, toys, holiday items, clothing boutique, accessories and more. Games, prizes, food and live entertainment at 3 p.m. are just some of the activities being planned.

HARDWICK — The Lindsey Meyer Teen Institute will sponsor College Track 2005, a program that provides students with the resources, support, advice and preparation needed to get an early start on a successful post-high school life.

The program will be held Wednesday, Aug. 24 to Friday, Aug. 26 at Camp Ralph S. Mason, Hardwick. Fee is $350. Contact 201-696-0368 or lmti@lmteeninstitute.org with any questions.

RUTHERFORD — The Rutherford Recreation Department Ladies Volleyball Team rosters are being accepted until Aug. 26. The team fees are $250 for teams with 10 or more current Rutherford residents; $350 for teams with less than 10 current Rutherford residents.

The league runs from September until March on Thursday evenings. For more information, call the recreation department at 201-460-3015.

LYNDHURST — Commissioner Tom DiMaggio, director of the Lyndhurst Department of Parks and Recreation, announced a trip to Showboat Casino in Atlantic City on Friday, Aug. 26, open to any township resident 21 years and older.

Tickets are $17 per person with a coin return of $18 and $5 coupon off the buffet, and are on sale at the parks department. There will be one 52-passenger bus. Call 201-804-2482 for information.

RUTHERFORD — The Summer Book Sale of the Murray-Hodge American Legion Post 453 is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 27, at post headquarters, 58 Meadow Road, Rutherford. A wide selection of books in both hardcover and paperback, as well as selected magazines and paper ephemera, will be available at modest prices, beginning at 10 a.m.

LYNDHURST — St. Michael’s Parish will hold its monthly bus trip to Atlantic City, going to Resorts casino, on Sunday, Aug. 28. The bus will leave from the St. Michael’s parking lot at 10:30 a.m. Cost is $23 with a surprise return and refreshments.
