More cops suspended in bounty hunter case

RUTHERFORD — Two police officers and a sergeant were suspended with pay in connection with the Claudia Santana bounty hunter case, said Rutherford Police Chief Steve Nienstedt.

Sgt. Nick Loizzi is already suspended without pay based on criminal charges.

Nienstedt said the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office found no criminal wrong doing on the part of these three officers involved. He said they were suspended following the Rutherford Police Department’s own administrative investigation. They were suspended effective Aug. 5.

Scaled-down development plan passes at old ShopRite

LYNDHURST — After a meeting marked by dramatic moments, the Lyndhurst Planning Board unanimously passed the amended proposal presented by Lyndhurst Residential Communities II, LLC, for the old ShopRite area on Valley Brook and Delafeld avenues.

Mayor Richard DiLascio and Commissioner Brian Haggerty made and seconded the motion to approve the amended plan. At the request of the developer, a court reporter was present, and all who spoke from the floor were required to swear on the Bible to “tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth.”

NA looking for new prosecutor

NORTH ARLINGTON — North Arlington’s prosecutor post is open now that current prosecutor David Lafferty has been appointed as judge in Paramus.

Mayor Russell Pitman said the borough has received quite a lot of resumes to fill the position, and that a new appointment will be made at the town council meeting on Aug. 18. In the meantime, Christopher Martin will serve as the town’s alternate prosecutor.

Construction site hit hard by break-ins

EAST RUTHERFORD — Burglaries at the future site of Lowe’s Home Improvement Warehouse on Route 17 North reached a high last week, police said.

On Aug. 1, Carson and Roberts Site Construction and Engineering of Lafayette reported that unknown actors severed the bolt lock of a trailer, stealing Topcon pipe and rotary lasers, a 14-inch demo saw, a concrete chainsaw, chains and a pry bar from inside. The tools had a combined value of $10,000.

LPD takes a stand against crime

LYNDHURST — Guns, gadgets and gear were on display at the Lyndhurst Night Out Against Crime on Tuesday, Aug. 2. The event, sponsored locally by the department of public safety, showcased the services and programs offered by the Lyndhurst Police and Fire departments. With their truck in the background, the fire department offered fire safety tips. The police department displayed their equipment, and officers answered questions about their areas of specialized training. Volunteer groups that work closely with the LPD also offered information about their services.
